What Happens After a Bail Bond Is Posted in San Diego?

When a bail bond is posted, families often ask: “Can we pick them up now?” Usually there is still a release process to complete. The exact timing depends on the facility and the person’s case.

The jail processes the bond and checks custody status

Jail staff must record and verify the bond, complete release steps, and determine whether anything else requires the person to remain in custody. The Sheriff’s custody page cautions that posting bail does not guarantee release when another case applies. Do not rely on a predicted pickup time until the facility confirms it.

Plan the pickup, but stay flexible

Ask which facility will release the person and where pickup happens. Keep your phone available for updates. Property return, staffing, workload, and additional checks can affect timing. If the online record changes, confirm what it means with the facility rather than assuming the person is already outside.

Release is the beginning of the court process

Before leaving, the person should understand the next court date and any instructions or conditions they receive. Keep copies of paperwork and confirm the hearing information with the court or attorney. Missing a required appearance can have serious consequences. The San Diego Superior Court warns that failing to appear can lead to arrest.

Our booking and release guide discusses general timelines. Those are estimates, never a guarantee for a particular case.
